It’s been discussed a few times, but we’ve still never seen a sequel to Step Brothers, Adam McKay’s masterpiece about two grown men (Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly) whose parents marry, forcing them into an unlikely and unwanted familial relationship. And apart from a few small cameos and supporting appearances, Ferrell and Reilly, who also co-starred in McKay’s great Talladega Nights, haven’t made another movie together at all, with or without McKay. It’s enough to make a man give up hope, and possibly to stop lathering up their gorgeous six-pack abs with Kiehl’s.

But do not despair, friends. The possibility of a new McKay/Ferrell/Reilly film persists, and may actually be getting closer to becoming reality. In a chat at the Director’s Guild late last year (as reported by The Playlist), McKay discussed a comedy that would reunite the Step Brothers stars. From the sound of things, it would merge McKay’s earlier, sillier work with the more politically motivated ideas that just produced 2015’s Oscar contender The Big Short.

Here’s how McKay described the movie:

“I’m actually talking with [Will] Ferrell and John C. Reilly about doing a comedy about two guys who go down to defend America’s borders against the immigrants, and I’m pretty excited about it,” McKay said. “We actually have Jesse Armstrong who wrote In The Loop — [he’s] delivering a draft, I think, next week.”

Okay so a movie from the guys who made Step Brothers, from a script by the guy who wrote In the Loop? I would be down for at least one (1) ticket. Here’s hoping this is not the last we hear about this project.
