Next months brings sequels to Independence Day, The Conjuring and Now You See Me, a new Pixar film, and a comedy from the Lonely Island trio. And that’s only half of it. ‘The BFG’ Trailer: Mark Rylance Isn’t Like a Regular Giant, He’s a Cool Giant
Following its premiere at Cannes (where reactions were decidedly…mixed), Disney has unveiled a new trailer for The BFG, Steven Spielberg’s fantastical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book. Starring Spielberg’s new BFF Mark Rylance in the titular role, The BFG takes us to an enchanting but dangerous world filled with bone-crunching, gizzard-gulping giants. But don’t worry, the BFG of The BFG is a nice giant. Promise!
‘The Accountant’ Trailer: Ben Affleck Is an Assassin With a Beautiful Mind
Early details on The Accountant made the new film from Warrior director Gavin O’Connor sound like it was based on a graphic novel, even though it’s not: Ben Affleck stars as a white collar accountant who leads a double-life as a lethal assassin. So it wasn’t really surprising when WB announced plans to release a tie-in comic book for The Accountant. What is a bit surprising is the tone of the first trailer, which presents an intriguing and off-kilter drama about a man struggling with a vague mental disorder.
ABC Cancels ‘The Muppets’ After Just One Baffling Season
Despite an attempt to turn things around with a new showrunner in the middle of the first season, The Muppets hasn’t really caught on with audiences the way ABC had hoped. What once seemed like a surefire hit (it’s the Muppets!) turned into a bizarre experiment (it’s a meta-fake-documentary series!) before ultimately becoming an interesting failure (shrug emoji), at best. The short version: ABC has cancelled The Muppets after just one season.
‘Nerve’ Trailer: Dave Franco and Emma Roberts Teach Us the Dangers of the Internet
Judging by a trailer that seemingly reveals just about everything (including the bodies of its leads), Nerve takes the premise of indie thrillers like Cheap Thrills and the lesser-seen 13 Sins and re-frames it with the treacherous world of a little place called The Internet. With that particular distinction in mind, it shouldn’t surprise you that Nerve was helmed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost, the directing duo behind Catfish (the movie, not the TV show).
Rumor: ‘Star Wars: Episode 8’ Features a Tom Hardy Cameo
Could Tom Hardy be following in the Stormtrooper footsteps of Daniel Craig? According to the latest rumor regarding Star Wars: Episode VIII, it would appear that the simple answer is yes. And while it’s easy to believe this report based on similarly fun cameos in The Force Awakens, now would be a good time to remind you of the 40 (yes, 40) rumors about that film that turned out to be totally wrong. As always, approach this report with a bit of skepticism, but it may very well be true.
Andre the Giant Biopic in the Works Based on Wrestler’s Graphic Novel Biography
A biography told in graphic novel form is far from typical, but then again, so was Andre Roussimoff, the pro-wrestling legend better known to fans as Andre the Giant. The 2015 graphic novel Andre the Giant: Closer to Heaven will serve as the inspiration for the late wrestler’s big screen biopic, with his daughter Robin Christensen-Roussimoff serving as consultant on the project.
‘Inferno’ Trailer Teaser Puts the Whole World in Tom Hanks’ Hands
It may be Mother’s Day, but Sony doesn’t want your dad to feel left out. The studio has released a teaser for the first Inferno trailer, along with a couple of posters offering a sneak peek at the finale to The Da Vinci Code trilogy. And it looks like the series is prepared to go out with a bang, as Tom Hanks is literally holding the fate of the world in his hands.
SNL Revives Dana Carvey’s Church Lady to Judge Our Choices Accordingly
It’s been several years since Dana Carvey’s Church Lady graced us with her benevolent presence, but Church Chat finally returns to SNL — and not a moment too soon. With Donald Trump running for president (what a world) and pop culture run amok, we, as a nation, are truly in need of sage wisdom from Carvey’s shrewdly devout Church Lady.
‘The Mummy’ Reboot’s Official Synopsis Teases Gods and Monsters and Tom Cruise
Just yesterday we learned that Russell Crowe is in talks to play Dr. Jekyll opposite Tom Cruise in The Mummy, and while Universal has yet to confirm that casting, they have released the first official synopsis for the reboot. The plot description makes some hefty promises for Alex Kurtzman’s directorial debut, which is meant to kickstart a new shared universe of action-packed horror movies based on the studio’s classic monsters.
Don’t Worry, ‘Ghostbusters’ Star Melissa McCarthy Is Also Confused by That Trailer
Director Paul Feig has maintained that his new Ghostbusters movie isn’t a sequel or a remake, but a reboot. Basically, it ignores the fictional events and characters depicted in Ivan Reitman’s classic 1984 film — which makes the first trailer for Feig’s movie a bit confusing. If you count yourself among those who were baffled by the trailer, then you can rest easy with the knowledge that someone who is actually in the movie is also confused. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have any answers for you.
