If you plan to see a doctor anytime soon, here’s some advice: bring a good book.

According to a new report from healthcare consumer watchdog Vitals, the shortest average wait time to see a physician increased more than a full minute last year from 2011.

Alaska led all states in shortest average wait time in 2012 at 16 minutes, 28 seconds. That’s up from 2011, when Wisconsin set the pace the way with 15 minutes, 26 seconds.

Vitals came up with the list by looking at wait times from patients of over 870,000 doctors.

Five States with the Shortest Average Wait Times

Alaska – 16 minutes, 28 seconds
Wisconsin – 16 minutes, 29 seconds
Minnesota – 17 minutes, 8 seconds
New Hampshire – 17 minutes, 10 seconds
North Dakota – 17 minutes, 43 seconds

Five States with the Longest Average Wait Time

Mississippi – 24 minutes, 25 seconds
Alabama – 24 minutes, 3 seconds
Arkansas – 23 minutes, 40 seconds
Louisiana – 23 minutes, 3 seconds
Nevada – 23 minutes, 2 seconds

Among cities, Denver has the honor of having the shortest wait times, with an average of 15 minutes and 15 seconds. If you're in El Paso, Texas, though, you may want to make sure the chair you sit in is comfortable because you're going to be there for a long time. It boasts the longest wait time among cities – 29 minutes, 6 seconds.
