Though it took various shapes and forms over the past few years, the game that would have been Command and Conquer has been cancelled, with the studio shutting down in the wake of EA's decision.

Originally dubbed Command and Conquer: Generals 2, the game that would evolve into a free-to-play Command and Conquer reboot will not make it out of alpha. In a statement on the game's official website, the development team announced the stoppage of work.

"Your feedback from the alpha trial is clear: We are not making the game you want to play," said Victory Studios. "That is why, after much difficult deliberation, we have decided to cease production of this version of the game."

While the fact the game will never see the light of day beyond the alpha is sad news, even worse is the decision to close studio. "The team at Victory Games will be disbanded," an Electronic Arts spokesperson told Polygon. "Wherever possible, we are working to help these talented people find other opportunities within EA."

Money invested in the alpha by players will be refunded over the next 10 days. Even though the feedback is what led to the initial decision, it's still disappointing news. What's more, there's no telling when a new Command and Conquer may ever see the light of day.
