Considering the fact that Jordan Peele began working on Get Out in a different political climate – at the start of the Obama administration – it only makes sense that the filmmaker had multiple alternate endings under his sleeve. Back in March, Peele stopped by BuzzFeed’s Another Round podcast to chat about the evolution of the film as it changed to keep up with and properly reflect the political times. He also revealed that he initially had several alternate endings to the hit horror comedy, all of which were much darker than what happens to Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) in the film’s final moments. We already know one of those endings, but now Peele’s revealed details of a second.

Those who’ve seen Get Out know that at the end – spoiler alert, so ya better get outta here if you haven’t seen it yet! – what appears to be a cop car approaches Chris moments after he’s killed his girlfriend (Allison Williams) and her crazy white family. It’s his bud Rod (LilRel Howery) in the car, and the film ends on a giant sigh of relief. One alternate ending, which might be the one that appears on the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release, is much more harrowing and finds actual cops arriving in the finale. But during Sunday night’s episode of Talking with Chris Hardwick on AMC (via Yahoo), Peele stopped by and spilled details of another alternate ending:

Rod comes to break into the gated community, finds his way in. He’s looking for Chris and he sees Chris looking in a window on Main Street, and he goes ‘Chris!’ and Chris turns to him and goes, ‘I assure you, I don’t know who you’re talking about.’

Well, that’s massively screwed up. That’s the type of ending that, while twisty, is a little too obvious and easy. And I can imagine that it wouldn’t have landed as well as the ending we get – a much needed release of tension and rush of optimism – or been as emotionally devastating as the super dark ending he initially described. Hopefully we get to learn what the rest of the alternate endings were when Get Out hits Blu-ray and DVD on May 23.
