‘Pacific Rim 2′ Already in the Works? Writer Hired for Sequel

Guillermo del Toro's giant robot epic 'Pacific Rim' has been dolling out the promotional material like candy. Blueprints and viral videos (one of which actually reveals a glimpse of those giant monster Kaiju), and a new site to house all of the material recently launched to start prepping fans for the film's July 12, 2013 release.

While we have a ways to go before actually seeing the film, it seems that Legendary Pictures are pretty confident it'll perform well. In fact, they're already preparing for a 'Pacific Rim 2.' But who's on board for the sequel, and will Guillermo del Toro be back to direct?

THR reports that screenwriter Travis Breachman, the guy who wrote the initial treatment for 'Pacific Rim,' has already been hired to pen the sequel. But what about the director?

Del Toro first came on to helm the project because his "passion project" 'At the Mountains of Madness' wasn't able to come to fruition. Does this mean he wouldn't have taken on directing duties under different circumstances?

While we're sure most of us would like to see him return for 'Pacific Rim 2,' sources close to the director say that is still a mystery. Let's keep in mind that he recently just signed on to lead 'Crimson Peak,' and he still has that 'Heaven Sent' project to think about.

'Pacific Rim' takes place in a world where giant monsters known as Kaiju have risen from the ocean and are terrorizing humanity. Our only defense are giant robots and the defense team who pilots them. Leading the cast are Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi.
