HBO's breakout 'True Detective' had long established that any potential season 2 would pick up with new story and a new cast, though we were still surprised to learn season 1 director Cary Fukunaga would leave the series behind as well. And while fans anxiously await casting news, 'True Detective' season 2 may pick up its next Oscar-winner in 'Exorcist' director William Friedkin.

While much of 'True Detective' season 2 remains speculative, IndieWire got the Academy Award-winning Friedkin to reveal that he'd at least met with series creator Nic Pizzolatto to discuss directing in the second season. Keep in mind that Friedkin's language is a bit vague, though he does seem to confirm that he's considered taking the job, and that he'd been privy to knowledge from Pizzolatto that someone in talks to direct would have:

I am considering it. I like this writer [Nic Pizzolatto] very much. I've met him, and he's the real deal as far as I'm concerned. Now, all the new seasons are different so I'm not committed—this new season has nothing to do with the last one. Except for him and his sensibility, which I think is extraordinary.

I'm...I can't say much more at this time. But I'm a fan of his writing, even though this will not be a continuation of what was done before with [Matthew] McConaughey [with whom obviously Friedkin has a relationship after 'Killer Joe'] and Woody Harrelson. So what you can say is I'm a huge fan of his writing, I've met with him, I like him, I like the direction he's taking with this.

So far of 'True Detective' season 2, we've been told the narrative would be woven around three leading characters in a California setting, though reports differ on what might constitute a lead. We have our own ideas about potential talent ‘True Detective’ season 2 might cull, in addition to everything we already know about the next cycle. Pizzolatto also told press previously that he’d like to focus on “hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system,” though it remains unclear how seriously we should take those words.

An Oscar-winner like Friedkin (for 'The French Connection' in 1971) would certainly start to fill the void left by Cary Fukunaga, even if the director only took on a few episodes. What do you think? How might 'True Detective' season 2 live up to the breakout status of the first, having to refill so much of its talent pool?
