Fort Imagination to Rise Again Thanks to Abilenes’ Junior League
A Childhood Landmark Lost: When Fort Imagination burned down, it felt like Abilene lost more than just a playground, it felt like we lost a piece of our shared childhood. My kids grew up playing there. My youngest, now 22, spent countless afternoons running through that wooden maze with her imagination set free. Like so many families, we were heartbroken when we learned the fire was intentionally set. But today, Abilene has something to smile about again.

A New Fort Imagination Is Officially on the Way
The City of Abilene has partnered with the Junior League of Abilene to rebuild Fort Imagination at Grover Nelson Park. A new Memorandum of Agreement, approved by the Parks & Recreation Board on November 18, 2025, clears the way for a full restoration, one that will be designed for safety, accessibility, and years of community use.

Junior League Leads the Charge
The Junior League will spearhead a community-wide fundraising effort, with every dollar going directly to the City for the design and construction of the new playground. They’ll also be providing volunteers to work alongside City staff and contractors during the build.
Anyone wanting to help restore this beloved landmark can donate through the Junior League of Abilene’s website.
How the City Will Bring It Back to Life
The City will hire a contractor to oversee the project using:
- Donations raised by the Junior League
- Insurance funds
- Additional City support if needed
All decisions regarding the new design and layout will be made by the City to ensure the playground meets all safety and operational standards.
A Community Comeback Story
Other groups and businesses are invited to join the effort, and the City and Junior League will coordinate updates as the project moves forward.
Fort Imagination may have been destroyed by fire, but thanks to Abilene’s heart, it will rise again, ready for a whole new generation of Big Country kids to dream, climb, and play.
