The holiday season is officially here, and with it comes one of the most cherished sounds of Christmas, the ringing of a bell outside local stores. To most of us, the red kettle is a familiar sight. But to someone in need, that kettle represents hope, compassion, and the possibility of a hot meal or a place to sleep.

As someone who has rung the bell before, I know firsthand that it’s more than simply standing by a kettle. It’s looking people in the eye, wishing them a Merry Christmas, and witnessing the generosity of complete strangers who are moved to help.

A Tradition That Changes Lives

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign isn’t just a tradition, it’s a lifeline. Since 1891, when a Salvation Army captain placed a crab pot on a San Francisco pier to collect money for Christmas meals, the effort has grown into one of the most recognized charitable campaigns in the world.

Here in Abilene, red kettles will be stationed outside stores now through Christmas Eve, Monday through Saturday. Last year, the campaign raised $110,000. This year, the goal is $115,000, and the need is greater than ever.

Major Joe Burton of The Salvation Army in Abilene put it best: “Every dollar you give helps someone eat, sleep easier, or keep the power on. Joy always comes back to you.”

Why Ringing the Bell Matters

Behind every kettle is a volunteer, someone who chooses to stand in the cold for the sake of those who have nowhere warm to go. Many of our neighbors will miss a meal this season. Some will spend the holidays alone. But we can change that. Being a bell ringer is simple, meaningful, and incredibly impactful.

Families, businesses, church groups, and individuals are encouraged to volunteer. You too can sign up at RegisterToRing.com or call (325) 677-1408.
