A Texas Thanksgiving Meal is Fed to the Hungry, Needy or Lonely
A Thanksgiving Tradition of Kindness and Community
For over 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of preparing a meal and serving it at a local church for family, friends, and Dyess Air Force Base troops who don’t have loved ones nearby. Yet, every Thanksgiving, my heart aches knowing countless families won’t celebrate—either due to financial struggles or the absence of loved ones to share a meal with.
Thankfully, a shining light in Abilene, Lucy’s Big Burgers, continues to bring joy and hope to those who might otherwise go without.
Lucy’s Big Burgers: A Feast for All
This Thanksgiving marks the 12th Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon hosted by Lucy’s Big Burgers on South 27th Street. The event is a heartwarming display of generosity, offering a free Thanksgiving dinner to anyone who needs it.
What’s most touching is witnessing families and young children, some of whom have never set foot in a full-service restaurant, marveling at the kindness of strangers providing them with a meal. Whether you’re hungry, lonely, struggling financially, or even well-off but craving connection, Lucy’s doors are wide open for all.
A Menu of Thanksgiving Classics
When you sit down at Lucy’s, there’s no menu, no ordering—just a hearty plate of Thanksgiving favorites served directly to you. The meal includes:
- Juicy turkey with savory dressing
- Mashed potatoes and sweet mashed potatoes
- Corn and green beans
- Cranberry sauce and a fluffy dinner roll
- Gravy to tie it all together
- A delightful selection of pies and cakes for dessert
Not a fan of corn or green beans? No problem—simply push them aside and enjoy the feast at your own pace. The experience is akin to dining at a full-service restaurant, but with one extraordinary difference: it’s entirely free.
