Warning: Travel in West Texas Is Extremely Risky Due to Icy Roads
Dangerous Road Conditions Continue Around Abilene
After being out on the roads myself in my big camo 1-ton diesel 4X4, I can tell you firsthand, these roads are slick, unpredictable, and downright dangerous. Ice, sleet, and snow have made travel risky across the Big Country, and officials are urging people to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary.
The goal? Keep drivers safe and keep first responders off the roads unless truly needed.

A Break in Precipitation - But NOT a Break in Danger
According to Jill Christie with the Texas Department of Transportation, the Abilene District is seeing a temporary break in precipitation and even some clearer skies.
But don’t let the sunshine fool you.
Anything that melts during the day will refreeze once temperatures drop tonight, creating black ice and hazardous driving conditions, making it more dangerous to drive tomorrow.
TxDOT’s 3 Critical Travel Warnings
1 - Avoid Travel If Possible
Road conditions remain challenging. If you don’t have to be out, stay home.
If you must travel:
Slow down
Plan ahead

2 - Don’t Crowd the Plow
TxDOT crews are working around the clock to treat highways and clear roads.
A snowplow was struck in Howard County, and thankfully, there were no injuries, but it’s a reminder:
Give TxDOT vehicles plenty of space to work
Their job is to make roads safer for YOU.
3 - Roads Are Still Hazardous
Clear skies do NOT mean clear roads. Ice can remain even when the pavement looks dry. Overnight refreezing will make conditions worse after sunset.
Black ice is especially dangerous because drivers often don’t see it until it’s too late.
4 - Taylor County Burn Ban Lifted
In a separate update, County Commissioner Statler confirmed that the Taylor County Outdoor Burn Ban has been lifted. However, with changing weather conditions, residents should still use caution and stay aware of local guidance.
5 - Check Before You Go
Officials strongly urge everyone to check DriveTexas.org before traveling. The site provides real-time updates on road conditions, closures, and hazards across the state.
Fearless Fernandez Advice…
“I’ve been out on these roads, and I’m telling you, if you don’t have to be out, don’t. Staying home doesn’t just protect you, it protects our first responders too.”
