Texas DPS Boosts Reward in Decades-Old Murder Case of Young Mother

Increased Reward to Solve Cold Case

I was recently interviewing Trooper Mark Couch with the The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and he informed me that the DPS is intensifying its efforts to solve lots of unsolved cases. The one their concentrating on is the 1981 murder of Karen Lynn Douglas by increasing the reward for information. A $6,000 cash reward is now being offered for tips that lead to an arrest if submitted before any another Texas Rangers cold case is spotlighted.

Tragic Discovery and Ongoing Mystery

Karen Lynn Douglas, a 22-year-old new mother, was brutally stabbed to death on January 6, 1981, in her Harris County home during what appeared to be a struggle. Her mother discovered her body while arriving to take her daughter to a doctor’s appointment. At the time of the murder, Douglas' infant child was in the home, and her husband was at work. She had been seen alive just two hours before her tragic death. The video below offers more insight on the murder if Kare Lynn Douglas.

Connection to Other Crimes?

This horrifying event occurred amidst a series of unsolved home invasions in the area, where lone women were targeted by a knife-wielding assailant described as a young, slender white male. The connection between Douglas' murder and these attacks remains uncertain, but the pattern of violence has left the community on edge for decades.

A unique tip number is provided to maintain anonymity.

Public Awareness and Rewards Program

As part of a DPS public awareness program, one Texas Ranger Unsolved Crimes Investigation (Cold Case) case is featured bi-monthly. The aim is to generate new investigative leads and bring renewed attention to these cold cases. The increased rewards are designed to encourage public participation and hopefully bring closure to families like that of Karen Lynn Douglas.
