It was a Boy Scout tradition when we lived in Utah, I have cherished memories of spending cool mornings by the water, catching these colorful beauties. Not only are they a blast to reel in, but they’re also one of the tastiest fish you can prepare. From pan-frying with butter and herbs to baking with lemon and spices, there’s no wrong way to enjoy a tasty, healthy rainbow trout meal.

Rainbow Trout Restocking Brings Excitement to Texas Anglers

As the holiday season nears, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is set to begin its annual rainbow trout restocking program. Starting November 27, the day before Thanksgiving, over 340,000 rainbow trout will be stocked in lakes, rivers, and ponds across Texas. This beloved winter tradition offers anglers an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while reeling in this tasty, vibrant fish.

Why Rainbow Trout?

Rainbow trout are prized for their delicate flavor and ease of catching. They thrive in cold water, making the winter months ideal for stocking and fishing in Texas. According to Carl Kittel, TPWD's Rainbow Trout Program Director, “Rainbow trout can be caught on a variety of baits and lures, and they are great to take home and eat. Our winter program has been a favorite of anglers for over forty years.”

Stocking Schedule and Locations

From November 27 to March 9, rainbow trout will be released into a variety of waterbodies, including:

• Guadalupe River: Known as one of North America’s premier trout streams, this area supports year-round trout fishing due to its cool waters.
• Urban Lakes: TPWD’s Neighborhood Fishin’ program stocks 18 lakes near major cities like Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. These family-friendly locations are perfect for new anglers and kids.
• State Parks: You can fish for free at Texas state parks from the bank, pier, or dock. Plan your visit and reserve a day pass in advance to ensure entry during busy times.

Fishing Regulations and Tips

To protect the trout population, anglers are encouraged to follow Texas regulations:

• Daily Bag Limit: Five trout per person with no minimum size.
• License Requirements: Adults need a fishing license with a freshwater endorsement, but youth under 17 fish for free.
• Pole Limit: No more than two poles per person in Community Fishing Lakes or state park fishing areas.
