Guess Who Has A Horse Rescue Ranch in the Heart of Texas?

Most Texans can belt out every word of a Willie Nelson song, but there’s a side of the legendary musician that many don’t know. Beyond his Grammy-winning music career, his former restaurant ventures, and his successful cannabis brand, Willie’s Reserve, there’s another passion that’s close to his heart, and it is, rescuing horses.

Yes, Willie Nelson, the iconic country/rock Red-Headed Stranger, runs a 700-acre horse rescue ranch in Spicewood, Texas, where he gives a second chance to horses once bound for the slaughterhouse.

Willie’s Heart for Horses

I first learned about Habitat for Horses in Alvin, Texas, during one of their fundraising events a few years back. That’s when I discovered just how deeply involved Willie is in horse rescue. He doesn’t just donate—he’s personally taken in over 70 horses, providing them with a safe haven at his aptly named Luck Ranch.

"My horses are probably the luckiest horses in the world," Willie once said in an interview.
"They get hand-fed twice a day, and they were just ready to go to slaughter. That’s probably the last thing they remembered, so they’re happy horses."

Where Willie Feels Most at Home

Despite his larger-than-life presence on stage, Willie’s most comfortable place isn’t in the spotlight, it’s at Luck Ranch, surrounded by his horses. True to his outlaw spirit, he jokes:

"When a horse is here on the ranch, the horse is in Luck. When a horse is not at my ranch, the horse is out of Luck."

Whether he’s strumming his guitar, rolling a smoke, or tending to his rescued horses, one thing’s for sure, Willie Nelson has a heart as big as Texas.
