Spring is upon us, so natural disasters like tornadoes and flash floods will run rampant across Texas. To help prepare for inevitable severe storms that march across the Lone Star State, The Texas Comptroller has announced a tax-free weekend for emergency supplies.

Starting at 12:01 am Saturday, April 22nd, and ending at midnight on Monday, April 24th, you can buy certain emergency supplies tax-free during this sales tax holiday. So whether you shop online, in-store, by telephone, by mail, by custom order, or by any other means, you can save some cash this weekend.

There is no limit on the number of qualifying items you can purchase, and you do not need to give an exemption certificate to claim the exemption. (<a href="https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/publications/98-1017.php" target="_blank">Texas Comptroller</a>)

What qualifies for tax exemption this weekend?

Portable generators that are less than $3000 qualify as well as emergency ladders and hurricane shutters that are less than $300.

Items Under $75 that qualify include:

  • Axes
  • Non-electric can openers
  • Batteries
  • Carbon monoxide detectors
  • Coolers
  • Fire extinguishers
  • First aid kits
  • Fuel containers
  • Tie-down kits
  • Hatchets
  • Ice products
  • Light sources
  • Mobile phone chargers
  • Smoke detectors
  • Tarps

Unfortunately, there are some things that do not qualify like tents, chainsaws, toilet paper, camping supplies, gloves, car batteries, medical masks, and stepladders. (Do real ladders qualify? ha)

So, again only certain things qualify. But any opportunity to not have to pay taxes on something should be welcome in my opinion.
