The new school year starts on August 17th for most Abilene area kids and that means it's time to start thinking about getting those necessary school supplies, including backpacks.

One thing about our community is that they always come through for those in need and that also goes for helping kids with school supplies. One Abilene business is doing just that by helping kids out with free backpacks.

Hearts BBQ is hosting their "3rd Annual Backpack Give-a-way" on Saturday, August 6th from 11 until 1 in the Drug Emporium parking lot.

Along with free backpacks (while supplies last), Hearts BBQ will also be giving out free hot dogs with chips and water. There will also be other giveaways, including free vitamins from Vitamins Plus and free snow cones from our favorite, Zombie Cones.

Abilene Spidey will also be there to entertain the kids, so don't forget about getting a selfie with Abilene's own superhero.

Hearts BBQ would like to thank these sponsors for making this annual event possible: Mr. Electric Abilene, Jack & Jill's Storybook Co, Hanna & Allen, Lone Star Electric, and Mattman Services.

The following Saturday (August 13th) will be another big day for area students. Not only do they have a chance at free backpacks with this event, but there's also a school resource fair from 9 am until 1 pm. That event will take place at the Taylor County Expo Center.

Those growing kids are probably stretching your wallet as far as it'll go. Well, save some money by taking them out to eat at an all-you-can-eat buffet.
