While other women* have appeared on the Texas Most Wanted list, only Margaret Smith has the current distinction of being the only female "Still Wanted." She's been wanted for over 15 years.

*Recent examples include Iris Rodriquez, wanted for indecency with a child, who was caught in late 2023 by INTERPOL, and Adiah Namir Roberson—wanted for the murder of a Sonic employee, who was captured in October 2024 based on a Crimestoppers tip.

Margaret Smith was placed on the Most Wanted list after she fled while on bond awaiting her murder trial. Her alleged accomplice, ex-Marine Dylan Laughrey, was tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison, according to CNN. He maintains his innocence.

Who Is Margaret Lorrain Smith?

Smith is a 66-year-old white female who is 5-6" and was last weighed at 185 pounds. Her last known location was Angleton, Texas; she should be considered armed and dangerous. She often dyes her hair or wears wigs, and has a thyroid condition for which she takes medication.

She had four children with her husband George Smith and once owned a hamburger restaurant in Surfside Beach. George Smith had property he wanted to pass down to the children, however, Margaret want to sell it and go her own way with a new, younger boyfriend, according to CNN.

Her children were shocked as she dyed her hair, began wearing provocative clothing, and hung out with a young crowd of alleged drug-dealing partyers.

Margaret then allegedly took matters into her own hands- forging George's signature to liquidate his assets.

Details of The Murder

Margaret invited George to dinner on the night of August 6, 2007. The next morning his body was found on the beach. His face had been so badly beaten that he had to be identified with his driver's license.

Medical examiners would determine that George had been beaten with a leaf spring- a heavy piece of metal from a car's undercarriage. Witnesses claimed Dylan Laughrey had asked to borrow a weapon the night of the murder, and phone recorders indicated that Margaret had called him.

While Dylan admits Margaret gave him money to commit the murder, he denies having committed the crime.

Margaret was arrested along with Dylan for the murder but was able to post bail- using Geogre's properties as collateral. She cut off her ankle monitor and fled. The bond company sold the property at a fraction of what it was worth- and no one in the family had the means to fight for it.
