Jim Morrison made a career of nodding off at inopportune moments. He passed out when the rest of the Doors were expecting him in the studio. He passed out in the studio. Should the remaining members of the Doors reunite (it seems unlikely), drummer John Densmore knows who he'd want to fill Jim Morrison's space in front of the microphone. It's not clear if he's being cute or funny, but during a recent radio interview he said Jimmy Fallon could get the job done.

He's been dead for decades -- and the subject of countless retrospectives ever since -- but that doesn't mean we've heard and seen everything Jim Morrison committed to tape before he passed away. The latest example? A newly unearthed candid interview the Doors front man gave to director and journalist Howard Smith in 1969.

Doors fans can hear an unreleased song that's been locked in the vaults for over 40 years later today (January 9th, 2012).  'She Smells So Nice' was recorded during the sessions for the Doors' final album with Jim Morrison, 'L.A. Woman' in 1971.  It will be available at 11am central time on the band's facebook page.

There's a new book out there titled 'The End: Jim Morrison' that purports to reveal exactly how and where Jim Morrison died.  And according to the book, it was indeed a heroin overdose, but it didn't happen at home in a bathtub as the prevailing story goes. The surviving members of the Doors, along with producer Bruce Botnick, are preparing a deluxe edition of the band's album 'L.A. Woman' for release later this year. The double disc set will include rare outtakes of songs from the album, along with unreleased original songs. One of the rarities is said to be a version of the Barrett Strong Motown classic 'Money (That's What I Want)'.

I was reflecting recently on gifted, talented, and famous individuals in the world of music who coincidentally all died at age 27. It's a surprising list when you start compiling it.
