Decades after his death, Alfred Hitchcock is still considered one of the greatest directors of all time. But did you know that in addition to his reputation as the “Master of Suspense,” Hitchcock was also a notorious (no pun intended) prankster? He once bet someone they couldn’t spend the night in a darkened movie studio chained to a camera. Once the man agreed to the bet, and got into position, Hitchcock offered him some brandy - laced with a laxative. Ouch. That’s just one of the shocking facts featured in the newest episode of You Think You Know Movies!

Hitchcock was famous for making scary movies; so scary, in fact, that he professed he didn’t like to watch them himself, and didn’t fully understand why others went to see them. One of his most intense phobias was of being arrested, which stemmed from an incident in his childhood where his father had the local police put him in a jail cell for a short while to teach him a lesson. It worked all too well, and Hitchcock returned again and again to the idea of “the wrong man” who is mistakenly pursued by the cops in movie after movie, from The 39 Steps to North by Northwest.
