Around our household, we take the long Thanksgiving weekend to crank up the decorating for Christmas. A big part of the process is picking the right Christmas tree, and for some, this selection is serious business.

When it comes to fresh, live trees, Texas is probably not the first region that comes to mind. But...there's holiday hope out there. An article from AgriLife Today reveals there are a variety of tree types that do grow in Texas and would make a perfect Christmas addition to any home.

Virginia Pine

This is one of the most common varieties in the south, fragrant with short needles.

Afghan Pine

The Afghan pine is often found close to home in West Texas. Sturdy branches that are more spread out make it great for ornament hanging.

Eastern Red Cedar

Although red is in its name, it's actually a rich, green color. You'll find that classic Christmas tree shape and the seasonal aroma to go along with it.

Carolina Sapphire

Not the easiest to find, but it is grown throughout the South. It's noted for its fast growth, blue-tinted color, and awesome fragrance.

Leyland Cypress

If you have allergies, this is the tree for you. It's a hybrid of an Alaska-Cedar and Monterey Cypress, and it doesn't produce pollen.

Once you've made a decision on the type of tree you're wanting, the next step is finding a tree farm. If you ever have the chance to visit a local Christmas tree farm, it's an experience the whole family will enjoy. There's nothing like picking out your own live tree for the season. Some folks say it's the only way to go. You'll soon have all the sights and smells of the season in your own home. Plus, you'll know where that tree comes from - the Great State of Texas.

Take the family on a holiday outing to a local tree farm. Many farms have activities, stores and more to get you in that Texas Christmas state of mind. Check below to see some of the fun for yourself.
