Radar vs. Lidar Detectors: What's the Difference?

In years past police used radar scanners to check the speed of drivers. Radar scanners beam a radio wave that bounces back off the car to the scanner. This measures the vehicle's speed. Nowadays, however, police departments almost always use lidar scanners instead. These types of scanners use a beam of infrared light to track the speed of a vehicle.

Lidar detectors do exist and are absolutely legal to have in private vehicles. The only downside is that they can be pricey.

So, at least for now, these detectors remain legal for use in Texas providing drivers with an additional tool of awareness on the road. Stay vigilant, stay legal, and stay safe on your journeys across the Lone Star State.
