The man who played the legendary piccolo trumpet solo on the Beatles 'Penny Lane' has died at the age of 85.

David Mason has spent the last thirty years as a music professor at the Royal College Of Music. He has commented in interviews that he played with the finest orchestras in the world, but is best known for his work on 'Penny Lane'. The Beatles also featured Mason's trumpet on Magical Mystery Tour, A Day In The Life, and All You Need Is Love.
