It was 45 years ago today (August 8th) that the Beatles released their groundbreaking album 'Revolver'. It was a big leap forward for the band in sound and subject matter, although it did have the Fab Four's trademark pop sound in evidence. 'Revolver' was different from previous efforts in the fact that the band had five months to work on it. They only did a brief 9-show tour of the UK the previous year, and had an open ended schedule to exercise creativity in the studio.

The 'Revolver' album featured McCartney's 'Eleanor Rigby', which featured a string quartet accompanying him and no additional instrumentation. John brought psychedelic touches to the album such as 'She Said, She Said' and 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. Overall the music was experimental and diverse. Over the years 'Revolver' has become not only more of a fan favorite, but also a critic's choice as one of the very best albums by the the Beatles. How do you follow such an incredible effort? With 'Sergeant Pepper' the following year. Check out a solo performance by McCartney of the 'Revolver' song 'For No One':
