Taj Mahal
It's nice to have an Abilene restaurant that brings something completely unique to the city's cuisine: Indian Food. Taj Mahal is located where Spano's used to be in the shopping center just off Buffalo Gap Road and Rebecca Lane. They opened in August of 2011. The food is excellent and so is the service. They even serve an Indian buffet so you can sample various dishes on a single visit. Butter Chicken, Rice Pudding, and the curries are all very good. The atmosphere is peaceful inside. A good pick for a unique date on the weekend. Find Taj Mahal at 4534 Buffalo Gap Road. Reach them by phone at 698-2500.

Dickey's Barbecue
Abilenians love their barbecue. I like to call it Texas caviar. Dickey's Barbecue Pit opened in December of 2011 at 5001 Highway 277 South, on the corner of South 14th and Clack. The Abilene location marks their 200th restaurant. Dickey's opened in Dallas all the way back in 1941 and branched out to include locations nationwide. For the grand opening, Dickie's treated the first 200 customers to free BBQ sandwiches. The Dickey family still owns the restaurants, and they use 100 percent hickory wood to smoke their meats. It's a nice change of pace from the usual mesquite. The food is good and the place is designed for quick service. Their drive through makes it easy to get some good BBQ in a hurry. Heff's Burgers
Heff's Burgers opened in Abilene in November of 2010 at 3374 Rebecca Lane. It didn't take long to garner a big following. The hamburgers at Heff's are hand formed from fresh, never frozen beef. They're generous in size and put together with very fresh ingredients. Heff's jalapeno buns are delicious. The restaurant became so successful that they opened a second location in December of 2011, at 2801 South First in the old 'Hot Dog Castle' building. I love it because it's just a few blocks from the True Oldies studios! Call 691-1930 for the Rebecca Lane store or 677-1950 for the South First location.

Jimmy John's
Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches opened in Abilene September 2011 at 4213 Southwest Drive. Their shop is kind of tucked in to the 'Shops Of Abilene' stores on the Southwest Drive end of that center. Jimmy John's serves up fresh subs on their own 'homemade' bread. The ingredients are top quality, including sliced turkey breast, ham, and roast beef. And they feature Hellman's mayonnaise and Grey Poupon mustard. The Abilene store has a few seats inside, but Jimmy John's specialty is delivery. They cater too. I would say this particular shop would be a good idea for a tailgate party at your house. They pride themselves on quick delivery of a delicious sandwich. Genghis Grill
Genghis Grill specializes in mongolian stir fry cooking. Their concept is a 'build your own bowl' set up. You select the meats, vegetables, seasonings, and sauces you want in a bowl and then their expert chefs will prepare a delicious meal on the hot grill right in front of you. The Abilene restaurant opened in the summer of 2010, and is located at the former Luby's Cafeteria at 4438 South Clack. It's a lot of fun to eat there and the food is excellent. They've also got a full bar with a wide selection of drinks. Another great place to go on a date in Abilene, and it's convenient to theaters and shopping. You can call them at 480-1802.
