Holiday Traveling? Beware of Speed Traps in These 8 Texas Cities
As the Christmas holiday gets closer, many of us plan to hit the road traveling across the vast state of Texas. It's a special time to be with family and friends. However, there's an important part of the trip we must be aware of: speed traps.
A great resource is Speedtrap.org where you can not only report speed traps throughout the Lone Star State, but also find out where the most are being reported by motorists. Having lived in Texas for 98% of my life, I've traveled through its cities many times, always taking notice of speed traps.
Below are some of what I consider to be pretty intense areas. Be aware of these hotspots. Make your holiday travels safe but also ticket-free.
Estelline
Known as the classic "speed trap town," Estelline is notorious for its strict enforcement of speed limits. The tiny town, with a population of just over 100, picks up a hefty portion of its revenue from traffic tickets.
Houston
As one of the largest cities in Texas, Houston is known for not only its bustling traffic but also its speed enforcement, especially on highways leading into and out of the city.
Austin
The state capital isn't just known for its vibrant music scene but also for its speed traps, especially on Interstate 35, which sees a massive volume of traffic.
Lubbock
This city is particularly watchful of speeders on its loop and major intersections. Its
traffic enforcement is vicious, making it a hotspot for speed traps.
Small towns along US 287
This highway runs through several small towns where speed limits drop dramatically. Towns like Chillicothe and Quanah are known for their strict speed limit enforcement.
San Antonio
The Alamo City, with its network of roads and highways, has several areas where speed limits are closely monitored, especially on the outer loops and the interstate highways.
Amarillo
Located in the Panhandle, Amarillo is known for its speed traps along I-40 and other major roads.
Fort Worth
This city has a reputation for speed traps, particularly on highways and near construction zones. Fort Worth's law enforcement is zoomed in on safety through serious speed monitoring.
To me, being forewarned is always the best bet. Understanding where speed traps are most concentrated helps ensure holiday travels are not only joyous, but also free from the hassle of unexpected traffic tickets. Stay safe out there this holiday season.
