Convenience stores are a common sight all over Abilene. There you'll find it all - snacks, beverages, and pitstop items. While these places are convenient, they can also be a haven for unhealthy and potentially dangerous products. From sugary drinks and high-fat snacks to unregulated dietary supplements and expired food, there are several things you should probably stay away from when shopping at a convenience store.

Don't get me wrong, I shop them all the time. But I'm cautious. I guess for the same reason I'd never buy "fresh sushi" from one, if you follow where I'm going. I was recently reading an article by Readers Digest. They have a list of items you probably shouldn't buy at a gas station. The more I read, the more it made sense to me. You've got to be cautious in this day and age. Keep scrolling to take a look at a few things I found out. How many of these are you guilty of buying?

Wraps and Sandwiches

You always have to worry about the chance of these foods not being stored properly before purchase. Experts say these foods should be kept at 39 degrees or colder to prevent bacteria and viruses that could make you wish you had thought twice.

Sodas

I bet I know what you're thinking, and I get it. Going down to the store to buy a big cup of soda pop has been happening for decades. But in today's world, think about this: moisture that collects inside the machine and hoses is a primo environment for mold. It may cost a little more, but I always buy bottled soda along with a cup of ice. Do you really know the last time the soda nozzles were cleaned?

Beer and Wine

Unless your favorite brand is specifically on sale at the convenience store, your wallet is much better off if you grab your brew from a grocery or liquor store.

Nacho Cheese

Not the healthiest food you'll ever come across, especially at a gas station. In fact, I read about a documented death in California in 2017 after contaminated nacho sauce was consumed from a convenience store. Buyer beware.

Beef Sticks

This one stung a bit as I'm guilty myself. There's been more than one occasion that I've snapped into a Slim Jim. Come to find out they have a ton of sodium and preservatives. Neither of which is a good thing in excess.

Convenience stores have a lot of items that can be tempting to grab on the go, but you've got to be aware of the risks. Stay away from expired foods, overly-caffeinated drinks, and mystery meat. Remember to check those labels, look for warning signs, and use some caution when purchasing food and drink items at convenience stores.

Speaking of road-trip snacks, look below for some favorites. How many of these do you munch on?

Most Popular Road Trip Snacks For Texans

One website said the most popular road trip snack in Texas is rice cakes. After talking to long standing residents of Texas they would all agree that anything on this list is more popular than rice cakes.
