Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, Chicago (2002) follows the intertwined fates of two women in 1920s Chicago at the height of the Jazz Age.
Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones star as two Chicago murderers (the former a housewife dreaming of the stage and the latter a vaudeville star) who end up on Murderess' Row in the Cook County Jail. With the help of a slick Chicago lawyer (Richard Gere), both women battle back and forth for the attention of the media in hopes of winning lighter sentences in their trials. With both women acquitted, they team up as a double act and perform together in order to maintain their Jazz Age living and their good public image.
Both the initial 1975 Broadway run and the 1996 revival of Chicago received Tony award nominations and the 2002 screen adaptation won six Academy Awards in 2003.
