Stream the Flaming Lips’ ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ ‘Companion Piece’
Some of us thought it might be an early April Fool's joke, but the Flaming Lips have actually gone and recorded what they're billing as "an immersive companion piece" to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, and you can stream it right here.
Titled Flaming Side of the Moon, the Lips' latest release is meant to be played concurrently with Dark Side, and while we couldn't argue with annoyed Floyd fans who feel the original album didn't need anything added to it, it's also obvious that a fair amount of thought went into this project; on your first unaccompanied listen, you'll notice some pretty direct riff quotes from the Dark Side cut "Money." Not that quoting riffs makes an album a work of genius, but at the very least, listeners can take comfort in knowing that Flaming Side isn't just a random assortment of noises.
Of course, longtime fans of either band probably weren't worried about that -- the Lips covered Dark Side in 2009, on their album 'The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing The Dark Side of the Moon,' and as we previously reported, they'll continue to assert their classic rock bona fides with a Miley Cyrus-assisted tribute to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Just like the original Dark Side, Flaming matches up perfectly with The Wizard of Oz, so we've taken the liberty of embedding a Wizard-synced Dark Side video here, with Flaming embedded below. Today while you're ticking away the moments that make up a dull day, you can fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way while you hear these softly spoken magic spells in a whole new light.
