This probably isn't what smokers want to hear. However, smoking can lead to cataracts, and damage your optic nerve among other things. The best practice is to quit if at all possible. Ask your doctor for help.

Eat Healthy

Healthy vision starts with the food you eat. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, and zinc plus vitamins C and E are essential. Examples of foods high in these nutrients include:

  • Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards
  • Oranges, citrus fruits, or juices
  • Oysters and pork
  • Salmon or tuna
  • Eggs, nuts, and beans

A great way to keep your eyes safe is to avoid any foreign contact. Safety goggles are perfect for on the job and around the house. Playing sports like racquetball and hockey also requires proper eye protection. You only have one pair of eyes.

Take a Break From the Computer Screen

Nothing will beat your eyes down like staring at a computer screen for hours on end. This goes for cell phones too. Looking at a screen for a prolonged amount of time can lead to:

  • Neck, back, and shoulder pain

  • Dry eyes
  • Eyestrain
