Rob Grill, 67, lead singer and bassist for the Grass Roots died on Monday, July 11th after a fall . The cause of death was subdural hematoma (a bleeding between the surface of the brain and the skull)

The Grass Roots had 14 top 40 hits between 1966 and 1972, and most featured Rob Grill's distinctive voice out front. It's his vocal you're hearing on 'Let's Live For Today', 'Sooner Or Later', and 'Midnight Confessions', all of which reached the top 10.

I was fortunate to meet Rob before a show at Arlington Stadium back in 1986. The Grass Roots were on a bill with The Monkees and Herman's Hermits. All three bands played following a Rangers game. He was in an area behind the stadium cordoned off with chain link. He came right over to me and a small group of fans and signed autographs. He was a genuinely nice guy and a super talent who loved writing, playing, and performing music.

I saw him again the following year on the Monkees tour in Las Vegas. Again he was billed as 'The Grass Roots featuring Rob Grill'. His voice was stellar on both occasions. If you want an awesome listening experience, find a copy of the 1967 album 'Let's Live For Today'. Not only is that song a signature for the band, but the entire album is top notch music making and literally rings with the sounds of the summer of love.

Rob Grill, gone at 67. Rest In Peace. Below is a video of the Grass Roots at their peak, with Rob singing lead.  (via VintageVinylNews.com)
