Get Closer to the Animals With “Wild Access” at the Abilene Zoo
If you’ve ever wished you could get closer to the animals at the Abilene Zoo, there’s a special experience that goes far beyond simply walking past the exhibits. It’s called Wild Access, and it gives visitors a rare opportunity to step behind the scenes and see how some of the zoo’s most fascinating animals are cared for every day.
I recently had a small taste of that experience when a zoo ambassador visited my radio studio. The animal was a beautiful macaw named Blake, and I even had the chance to gently pet the bird while learning more about these colorful and intelligent creatures. Moments like that remind you how powerful it can be to connect with wildlife up close.
Go Behind the Scenes at the Abilene Zoo
The Wild Access program allows guests to go behind the scenes with zookeepers and explore areas most visitors never see. These experiences give families and animal lovers the chance to learn directly from the experts who care for the animals every day.
Each Wild Access experience costs $15 per person, and visitors can choose from several unique encounters. Guests can step inside the giraffe barn to see these gentle giants from ground level. Another option introduces you to two very different animals, the Aldabra tortoise, one of the largest tortoise species in the world, and the Steenbok, one of the smallest antelope species found in Africa.
Other Wild Access tours allow guests to explore the reptile holding areas, where keepers discuss venomous species and habitat updates, or step into the anteater habitat to learn more about these fascinating animals. Visitors can even meet the zoo’s reindeer up close in their back corral.
Why the Abilene Zoo Means So Much to Me
I’ve had the privilege of volunteering at the Abilene Zoo, and I’m also an annual membership holder, so this place is very close to my heart.
When you look into the eyes of these animals, it almost feels like they’re speaking back to you. Those moments are powerful reminders that these creatures once dominated ecosystems across the planet.
Experiences like Wild Access help people connect with wildlife in a way that encourages curiosity, respect, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
