As the movie Friday Night Lights suggested "Texas is home to the best high school football in the world" and I agree. Furthermore, I am convinced that Abilene and West Texas have the best high school football history in the state.

Case in point: Abilene High was named the Texas High School Football "Team of the Century" in 1999 by the Dallas Morning News, but Abilene High isn't the only team from this area with a winning pedigree.

#5: 1981 Brownwood Lions Bring Home Their Seventh State Championship

Brownwood started the 1981 season with a loss to Abilene Cooper. It would be the only loss the Brownwood Lions would see that season. Brownwood went on to win their seventh state championship that year.

The 1981 team had some good leadership. Guiding them through the playoffs and on to the state championship was their Coach Gordon Wood.

Brownwood Lions achieved seven State Championships (1960-1965-1967-1969-1970-1978-1981) and 2 Runner-up (1977-2010)

Gordon was Brownwood's head coach from 1960 to 1985. In 1980 the City of Brownwood honored him by renaming Cen-Tex Stadium to Gordon Wood Stadium. It was the 1981 Lions that gave coach Wood his last state title before Gordon retired.

#4: 2003 Jim Ned Indians led by Colt McCoy

Colt McCoy is one incredible athlete and he has what it takes to influence and motivate an entire team. Whenever McCoy got hurt and didn't play, the entire team struggled.

Colt McCoy's coach was his father, Brad McCoy. Colt was awarded the Associated Press 2A Offensive MVP and First-Team All-State on two different occasions. Today Colt McCoy is the Arizona Cardinals QB.

Colt McCoy managed to complete 536-of-849 passes (63.1%) for 116 touchdowns. He's ranked as the all-time leading passer in Division 2A for Texas High Schools.

Now, just because we have the 2003 Jim Ned Indians as one of the 5 best teams, we can't discount the 2020 team that won the state championship with an amazing play in overtime. Thus, snatching the Texas 3A Division 1 State Championship title from Hallettsville.

#3: 2004 Wylie High Bulldogs - Lone Star Cup Champions

The voice of the Wylie Bulldogs, Trace Michaels, once told me that, "to watch the 2004 Bulldog team play, is like watching a miniature NFL team, these kids played like there was no tomorrow. One of those young men was Case Keenum, who has gone on to break nearly every NCAA record in college football history."

While Keenum played football for Wylie his career stats were the stuff of legends. Case Keenum and the Wylie Bulldogs managed a 17-14 win over the Cuero Gobblers during the Class 3A Division 1 State Championship.

It was Wylie's first and only state title to this day. Furthermore, Wylie High School has also won the prestigious Lone Star Cup for academics and athletic accomplishments from 2000 to 2006.

Case Keenum passed for 6,783 yards, scored 48 touchdowns, rushed for 41 touchdowns, and racked up 2,000 yards. Keenum had 42 starts at quarterback and posted a career record of 31 wins.

#2: 1996 Cooper Cougars - High School Coaches Hall Of Fame

Cooper High School has given birth to several pro-NFL players: one was Dominic Rhodes. The 1996 Cougars had Rhodes as a running back when they played against Austin Westlake and their QB Drew Brees.

Although, the 1996 Cooper Cougars team may have lost the state championship to Austin Westlake 15-55. It's the combination of Dominic Rhodes, and Cooper's head coach, Randy Allen, that make the 1996 Cooper High Cougars my #2 team.

In the 1967 state championship game, the Cooper Cougars lost to Austin Reagan 19-20. Coach Randy Allen was the tailback for the 1967 Cooper Cougars team.

#1: 2009 Abilene High Eagles Is 'Team of the Century'

The 2009 Abilene High Eagles team is on the top of my list. This team was ranked #2 in the nation and was named "Team Of The Century" by Dallas Morning News.

In 2009, the Eagles went undefeated and won the Division II State Championship against Katy High School 28-17. This win gave the Abilene High Eagles their 7th State Championship and the first one in 53 years. The 2009 Abilene Eagles Football team is " The Team Of The Century" and my #1.

Obviously, these rankings are all based on my personal opinion, but if you feel like other teams deserve to be on this list, please email me.
