For the record, I have always wanted to be a singer and, as a matter of fact, I was once on a record label back in the early 90s. I recorded a few songs at Luv Records; two of these made the Billboard Magazine Top 100. Granted neither made it out of the top 50, but at least I gave it a try.

These days you can try out and compete in a local competition. Chorus Abilene is a nonprofit organization that exists to promote choral music through performance and participation by members of all ages. Every year they host a singing competition, Abilene Idol! This is their 12th season.

This competition is a major fundraiser for Chorus Abilene. All the proceeds benefit scholarships, full tuition, music programming, and various opportunities to perform around the Big Country and the world.

Abilene Idol's 2024 auditions are scheduled for Saturday, January 27 at the Mall of Abilene, from 11 am until 5 pm. While the auditions are just that - an opportunity for anyone to try out - they are still very competitive and extremely entertaining.

From the contestants that compete, sixteen finalists will be selected by a panel of judges - seven for the adult category (ages 16 and up) and nine for the junior competition category (ages 6 to 15 years old).

After making the finals, contestants will compete to be named the "2024 Abilene Idol" on February 17 at the Paramount Abilene at 352 Cypress Street. First, second and third places will win cash prizes. Let's all support this awesome event.
