10 Home Remedies That Help Stop Mosquito Bite Itching
Mosquitoes are definitely making themselves at home across Texas right now.
I found that out the hard way after Donna and I stopped by to congratulate our daughter on earning her CPA license. We only stood outside for a few minutes, but by the time we got back in the truck, my wife was covered with mosquito bites. A few minutes later, my daughter and granddaughter called to say they had been bitten several times too.
The first question my daughter asked was, "Daddy, what can I put on these bites to make them stop itching?"
Fortunately, there are several simple remedies you may already have at home.
10 Home Remedies That May Help
Here are the ones I've either used myself or have heard recommended for years:
- Apple Cider Vinegar – My personal favorite. Dab a little on the bite (avoid your eyes and broken skin) to help calm the itch.
- Baking Soda – Mix with a little water into a paste and apply to the bite.
- Honey – A tiny dab may help soothe irritated skin.
- Aloe Vera – Break off a leaf and rub the fresh gel directly on the bite.
- Peppermint Oil – Use a small amount (properly diluted if needed) for a cooling sensation.
- Fresh Onion – Rub a slice over the bite. It may help, but you'll have to live with the smell.
- Garlic – Some folks swear by it for relief...and maybe keeping a few "critters" away, too.
- Ice pack – The CDC recommends applying a cold pack or a bag of crushed ice wrapped in a cloth for several minutes to reduce itching and swelling.
- Oatmeal – A small oatmeal paste can help calm irritated skin.
- Vicks VapoRub – Another one of my favorites. It helps soothe the itch, and I've always believed mosquitoes aren't too interested in hanging around afterward.

Keep an Eye on Mosquito Bites
Most mosquito bites are harmless and disappear within a few days. However, some people can have allergic reactions, and mosquitoes can occasionally spread diseases.
If you notice severe swelling, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, fever, or other unusual symptoms after a bite, seek medical attention right away.
For our family, apple cider vinegar came to the rescue because it was already sitting in the pantry. It brought quick relief for Donna, my daughter, and my granddaughter. Vicks VapoRub is still a close second in my book.
Sometimes the best remedies are the ones you've had in your kitchen cabinet all along.
Okay, I admit it, I am not a doctor, and I sometimes like to play one on the radio. I will admit I got a lot of these home remedies from the AMA, the JAMA website, and one of my faves, Healthline online.
