I have met several people over the past few months who have moved to Abilene recently. Dyess Air Force Base, Abilene Christian University, or Hendrick Medical Center brought them here. The first question I always ask is, "How do you like our fair city?"

Honestly, I do not like some of the responses I get, because I think Abilene is a phenomenal city to live in. I have been told, "There's nothing fun to do in Abilene" or "Abilene's nothing but a church town." I've even been asked, "What do you all do for excitement around here?"

I like to start my responses with, "Abilene, aka the Key City and the Storybook Capitol Of Texas, is a family-friendly city!" So here goes my best sales pitch on how to convince people to move to Abilene.

Abilene is a vibrant city with a population of approximately 120,000 people and it is growing. Dyess has been upgraded to get a brand new bomber and with that comes the teams to support them. We've had a few manufacturing plants open in Abilene as well, and that too is adding to the growth of A-Town.

If I am to entice people to move to Abilene, I paint a picture of charm and fun:

  • Southern Hospitality:
Abilene is a tight-knit community that embraces newcomers with open arms. Whether you’re at a local coffee shop or one of our awesome hometown events, you’ll feel just like family.
  • Family-Friendly:
Abilene is a place where kids can be kids. Explore the Abilene Zoo, splash around at Adventure Cove, and create lasting memories.
  • Affordable Living:
Abilene offers a cost-friendly lifestyle without compromising on quality. Housing prices are reasonable, and your hard-earned dollars go further here.
  • City History:
Step back in time as you discover our historic downtown, where you'll find shopping boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, and bars.
  • Buffalo Gap:
The Buffalo Gap Historic Village takes you back in time when that tiny town was the county seat and you'll journey through our Texas roots.
  • Cowboy Life:
Find your inner cowgirl or cowboy. Abilene has the West Texas Fair & Rodeo and the Western Heritage Classic Ranch Rodeo where you can witness thrilling rodeo events and enjoy carnival rides.
  • Outdoor Adventures:
Love the great outdoors? Abilene has you covered. From hiking trails at Cedar Gap Park to fishing at Lake Fort Phantom Hill, there’s no shortage of natural beauty.
  • Culture and the Arts:
  • The Grace Museum and Center for Contemporary Arts celebrate creativity. Attend live performances by the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra or catch a play at the Paramount Theatre.
  • Education Hub:
Home to Hardin–Simmons University, Abilene Christian University, McMurry University, and Cisco College, Abilene facilitates a spirited academic atmosphere.
  • Foodie Paradise:
  • Savor mouthwatering barbecue at Joe Allen’s Pit Bar-B-Que, indulge in Tex-Mex delights, and discover hidden gems like Cypress Street Station.
  • Sunsets and Starry Nights:
Our wide-open skies have breathtaking sunsets, and stargazing is a must. Abilene’s Taylor County Expo Center hosts the annual Stars Over Abilene event.

Y'all come see us, ya hear?
