My wife Donna has always said that her grandparents told her that the Texas winter weather is over and spring is right around the corner when the mesquite trees start budding, and the blue jays, cardinals, scissortails, and bumblebees return. This past weekend my wife and I sat silently in our driveway watching the scissortails chase away the bluebirds and the cardinals.

That was when I noticed these funny little bulbs that had started popping up on our trees in the yard. Furthermore, both the Old Farmers Almanac and my wife's grandfather (who was quite a gardener) used to say, "When the apricot and peach trees start blooming, you had better gas up the lawnmower; spring is here, and summer is on its way!"

As winter bids farewell in Texas, a delightful array of birds and flora begin to grace the landscape. Here's what you can expect to encounter throughout the
Lone Star State during springtime:

The Old Farmers Almanac says these are the "Top Signs of Spring":

1. Birds are singing: The red cardinal, the mockingbird, the blue jay, and the scissortail flycatcher (also known as the Texas bird-of-paradise)

2. Trees are budding: The Mesquite, Fan Tex Ash, and other trees are budding

3. Flowers blossom: The wildflowers are blooming and, like Grandpa said, the apricot and peach trees sprout some flowers.

4. Butterflies, Bumblebees & Flies: The monarch butterflies, bumblebees, and flies will be out looking busy.

That's what we noticed while sitting quietly in our driveway. It was like everything was happy to be out, alive and well. Keep your eyes peeled for these birds, trees, flowers, and other visitors as winter transitions into spring in Texas.
