I’ll admit it, "I love Valentine’s Day."

But a few years ago, I learned something surprising. Several ladies I work with are very anti-Valentine’s Day. I’ve heard everything from “It’s just another work day” to “It’s stupid” and “Why celebrate a made-up holiday?”

Turns out, they may not be alone in Texas.

Texas Makes the Anti-Valentine’s Top 10

According to a study reported by Hard Rock BET Online Magazine, Texas ranks #7 among the most anti-Valentine’s states in America.

Here’s how they measured it:

  • 6,870 monthly Google searches in Texas for anti-Valentine’s terms
  • 1,665 divorce lawyers across the state
  • 51.2% of Texans are unmarried
  • 38% of social media posts about Valentine’s Day in Texas show negative sentiment

Texas scored 47.27 out of 100 in the overall rankings.

California, New York, and Florida topped the list, but the Lone Star State still cracked the Top 10.

Is Texas Just… Independent?

Now, before we throw out the roses and chocolates, let’s put this in perspective.

More than half of Texans are unmarried, and that alone shifts the tone of a “couples holiday.” And Texans are known for their independence. We don’t always like being told what day we’re “supposed” to celebrate love.

Some see it as commercial. Some see it as pressure. Some just don’t buy into it.

But Here’s My Take

Love doesn’t need a calendar date. But there’s nothing wrong with celebrating it either.

If you’re in love, celebrate it.
If you’re single, enjoy the freedom.
If you’re anti-Valentine’s, well… Texas has plenty of company.

Me? I’ll keep buying the roses.

Because even if Texas ranks #7 for Valentine’s negativity, I still believe a little love never hurt anybody.
