Austin to South Padre Island: How One Texas Trip Gave Me Two Completely Different Vacations
Sometimes a vacation isn’t about picking one vibe. Sometimes it’s about letting one city wear you out… and another one gently put you back together.
That’s exactly what happened on this Texas two-step trip that started in Austin and wrapped up in South Padre Island. Hey, city chaos first. Beach therapy second. Trust the process.
Exploring Austin, Texas: Weird Attractions, Big History, and Nonstop Energy
Austin, Texas, doesn’t tiptoe around its personality; it plunges straight into it. One of our first stops was the Museum of the Weird, which is exactly what it sounds like. Oddities, strange exhibits, and just enough “what did I just look at?” to remind you that Austin proudly marches to its own beat, and I dig that.

The State Capitol of Texas
After catching these weird vibes, we went from weird to historic with a tour of the Texas State Capitol. You know, as many times as I've been to Austin, I had never been in the building. It's huge, and the craftsmanship is next level. One minute you’re staring at something bizarre, the next you’re standing in one of the most iconic buildings in Texas.
Downtown Austin Hotel Life: Walkable, Loud, and Worth It
We stayed downtown at the Austin Marriott Downtown, which featured a killer rooftop pool overlooking downtown Austin. This hotel was basically around anything and everything you would need for an awesome time in the downtown area.

South Padre Island: Flip-Flops On, Responsibilities Off
Then came the drive south. Somewhere between traffic lights and open road, the pace started to drop. The noise faded. The schedule loosened up. And by the time we rolled into South Padre, it was clear this half of the trip had a completely different job.
Once we checked into our place in South Padre Island, the clock seemed to stop mattering from that point on. We experienced the Salty Rim Bar at Margaritaville Beach Resort, rang in the new year with some killer fireworks, and listened to the palm trees swaying like they’ve got nowhere else to be.
While Austin fills the tank, South Padre Island drains it, but in the best possible way.
This trip was the perfect reminder that you don’t have to choose just one kind of vacation. Texas is massive, weird, loud, quiet, historic, laid-back, and everything in between — sometimes all in the same week.
From Capitol views and downtown streets to palm trees, pool bars, and beach nights, check out some of my favorite pictures from the trip.
