Whenever you mention Camp Mystic to anyone in Texas it’s difficult not to get emotional thinking about the 25 campers and 2 counselors who lost their lives in the floods that took place around the Fourth of July last year. It was decided last week that the site of the deadly flooding will not open this summer.

What Investigators Say About the Flood Response

Investigators hired by the legislative committee said last week that the camp directors could have acted sooner to evacuate the campers and had a chance to save everyone. The investigation also revealed that the camp didn’t do enough training for its counselors on what to do in case of an emergency.

Camp Mystic was planning to open again with more than 800 campers expected this summer, counselors were expected to begin reporting for duty at the end of May. The camp was working to renew its license with the Texas Department of State Health Services as the agency was still investigating complaints filed against the camp.

Lawmakers Question Camp’s Future

Lawmakers questioned if the Eastlands should be able to reopen this summer. One of the most vocal critics of Camp Mystic has been Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick who called on DSHS to close them for this summer on multiple occasions.

The Eastlands said they will continue to cooperate with all ongoing investigations. However, some families who lost children believe the Eastlands aren’t accepting accountability for the tragedy that took place at Camp Mystic.
