Big Changes Could Be Coming to South Plains School Sports
Do you have kids playing high school sports in Lubbock or at another school in the South Plains? Then, heads up: some big changes may be coming your way.
Depending on who you ask, the changes could either be fantastic or just a big headache for schools that are already juggling a billion other things.
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) Legislative Council just approved several proposals that may change how Texas high school athletics operate.
So, What's Changing?
First, there's the possibility of a 35-second shot clock for varsity basketball. It will begin with larger schools, no earlier than the 2028-28 school year. Smaller schools will get additional time before it is actually implemented.
Translation? You won't be able to hold the basketball hostage for an eternity.
Probably a solid idea, but I'm no authority on sports. I can barely tie my shoes.

Another big change involves playoff games.
Beginning in 2027-28, teams may receive home-field advantage during the first round based on their district finish.
And one last possible change I find pretty exciting: girls flag football could become a UIL pilot program as early as the 2028-29 school year.
How totally rad is that?!
LET'S GO, GIRLS!
Will Small Schools Still Benefit From These Changes?
That's the biggest question, really.
Big schools have big money and staff to handle changes without much fuss.
Tiny schools on small budgets don't have the same wiggle room.
New equipment, extra coaching responsibilities, and potentially longer playoff trips certainly aren't free...
These proposals still have to be approved by the state, so don't worry, nothing is changing overnight.
What do you think about the changes?
