The official end of Summer is here. *Cries in Spanish* Labor Day weekend! Which means a three-day weekend for many people and one last chance to squeeze in some fun before summer officially starts winding down.

Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, and before you start planning on running errands to pay bills or send mail, keep in mind that most of these places will be closed on Labor Day Monday.

What’s Closed on Labor Day?

Because Labor Day is a federal holiday, several government and public services will be closed Monday.

Government offices

Federal offices will be closed Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. The City of El Paso also closes its administrative offices for the holiday. The city’s Tax Office, Municipal Court, public libraries, recreation centers and several other city facilities will also be closed.

In Las Cruces, most city offices and facilities will also be closed Monday, including City Hall, public libraries, museums, the Rio Grande Theatre and RoadRUNNER Transit. Emergency services, including police and fire, will continue operating as usual.

Post offices and mail delivery

Need to mail something? You’ll have to wait until Tuesday.

The U.S. Postal Service says all post office locations will be closed Monday, with regular mail delivery and retail services resuming Tuesday, September 8.

Banks 

Most traditional banks and credit unions will be closed for the federal holiday.

If you need to take care of banking business, ATMs and mobile banking services should still be available, although individual institutions may have their own holiday schedules.

Schools and libraries

Public schools and most colleges and universities are closed for the holiday, and public libraries are generally closed as well.

In El Paso and Las Cruces, it's a good idea to check with individual facilities before heading out, since some recreation facilities and special programs may have different holiday hours.

What’s Open on Labor Day?

The good news: Labor Day is one of those holidays when much of the retail and restaurant world keeps right on going.

Stores and shopping centers

Most major retailers, department stores, grocery stores and shopping centers are expected to remain open, although individual locations may have reduced holiday hours.

Grocery stores

Most major supermarkets will be open Monday, although holiday hours can vary by location.

Restaurants, coffee shops and bars

Most restaurants, fast-food locations, coffee shops and bars will be open as usual, but hours can vary. If you’re making plans for a specific restaurant, checking ahead is always a good idea.

Pharmacies and convenience stores

Many major pharmacy chains and convenience stores remain open on Labor Day, although pharmacy departments may have shorter hours.
