There's a new book out there titled 'The End: Jim Morrison' that purports to reveal exactly how and where Jim Morrison died.  And according to the book, it was indeed a heroin overdose, but it didn't happen at home in a bathtub as the prevailing story goes.

Sam Bernett, the author of the book and a good friend of Morrison's while he was in Paris, says that Jim actually died in a night club bathroom.  He says he was an eye witness at the scene, and that Marianne Faithfull was also there and sworn to secrecy. Bernett goes on to say that she won't talk about what happened at the club to this day.

The book reveals that a cloakroom attendant at the 'Rock And Roll Circus' nightclub told Bernett that someone had locked himself in one of the bathroom cubicles and wouldn't come out.  Bernett went in to find Morrison slumped over a toilet.  He says Jim had obviously been snorting heroin and there was foam and some blood around his mouth.  An off duty medic at the club declared that he was dead.

Marianne Faithfull was at the club that night and witnessed the scene as well, according to the book.  Morrison's body was then supposedly moved back to his apartment and placed in the bathtub before authorities were called.

The statute of limitations on Jim Morrison's demise has run out, and even if the story is true, it appears there was no foul play in the death itself.  Jim Morrison was excessive in every way, and if he hadn't died that night, his days were definitely numbered due to those excesses with alcohol and drugs.

The story has enough validity that authorities in France are considering a reinvestigation of the circumstances surrounding the death just the same, because there could be civil penalties involved. (via RollingStone.com)  The video below is from a 1969 PBS broadcast.
