The iconic dress Marilyn Monroe wore in the movie 'The Seven Year Itch' fetched $4.6 million at auction on Saturday (June 18th). The dress was featured in the classic subway scene billowing up around Monroe in one of the most famous scenes in all of cinema.

And that dress wasn't the only jaw dropper in this auction of Hollywood memorabilia owned by Debbie Reynolds. She also put up for auction Marilyn's red sequined dress from 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'. It hammered at $1.2 million.

Other Hollywood costumes in the collection included a blue cotton dress worn by Judy Garland in 'The Wizard of Oz', which netted $910,000.

Debbie Reynolds has been collecting Hollywood costumes since she was a young actress working for MGM in 1970, when the company auctioned off everything in its storehouse of clothing. She indicated that collecting these items became an obsession over the years, and she certainly had some of the best and most valuable items in motion picture history. The items were sold to cover a large debt owed to several creditors from a Reynolds project that went bankrupt in 2006.

Also sold in the auction, conducted by auction house 'Profiles In History' were Marlon Brando's coronation costume from 'Napoleon Bonaparte' and Elizabeth Taylor's brown dress from 'Raintree County'. More information on the auction can be found where I sourced this story at Today.MSNBC.com.
