Buying sunscreen with adequate protection against both sunburn and skin cancer will get a little easier next year due to new FDA rules. Most sunscreens out there are rated for protection against ultraviolet B, which causes sunburn. But it's the more penetrating ultraviolet A that is known to cause skin cancer and premature aging.

In 2012, manufacturers will be required to place a warning label on sunscreens that are not 'broad spectrum', offering protection against both types of UV radiation. The label will state: 'This product has been shown only to prevent sunburn, not skin cancer or early skin aging'.

Right now, when shopping for sunscreen, you should look for the words 'broad spectrum' or specific references to the product protecting against 'UVA and UVB'. As always the product you select should have a protection factor of SPF 15 or higher to be effective.

Especially here in West Texas, it is extremely important to protect your skin from the damaging effects of intense sunlight. (via WebMD.com)
