Have you ever looked at the Seal of Texas? I mean really looked at it, and wondered what all those symbols stand for. I think even most native Texans may have a hard time knowing the exact meaning. Most of us may recognize the seal, but what does it actually symbolize?

An article from Texas Proud filled me in. There's definitely some significant symbolism going on here. The official state Seal of Texas is much like a book in that it tells a story. Let's take a look at what makes it so unique.

Front and center, there's a single star. This is the "Lone Star", and it's super important for Texas. Back in 1836, Texas became its own country - called the Lone Star Republic - after gaining independence from Mexico. It remained that way until 1845 when it joined the United States. The star symbolizes that brave and independent time.

Surrounding the lone star, there's a shield that symoblizes protection. Much like a shield guarding Texas and its freedom.

There are branches wrapped around the shield. One side is a branch from a live oak tree. Oak is strong and tough, just like the people of Texas. On the other side, there's an olive branch, a symbol of peace.

At the bottom of the seal, there are two important dates. 1836 is when Texas became its own country, and 1845 is when Texas joined the United States. All together these elements on the seal remind us of the bravery, strength and heart of this great state.

Next time you see the Seal of Texas, remember the story it tells about the state's past and the pride of its people. Whether it's the lone star, the oak tree, or the olive branch, each element has its own special place.
