From there, the gesture went to Rome, where it was known as the "digitus impudicus" - that's Latin for "indecent finger." The Romans used it much the same way we do today, to insult others. They even thought of it as a representation of the male parts, with the finger acting as a symbolic stand-in for the penis and the surrounding fingers as the testicles.

But here's where it gets even more interesting: the notorious Roman Emperor Caligula took the insult to a whole new level. He would actually make people kiss his middle finger instead of his hand to show his superiority and belittle them.
