It's about that time once again. Time to set the clocks back one hour this Sunday, November 5th. Daylight Saving Time (DST) is something that's been practiced in many countries for over a century. The idea here is to make better use of daylight by moving the clocks forward one hour in the spring and back one hour in the fall.

The whole idea surrounding DST is controversial. An article from Time Magazine recently came out as to where things stand regarding DST. I say enough of the back and forth already. It may seem like a good way to enjoy more daylight, but there are several reasons I found as to why this practice should be abolished.

Health Issues

Changing the clocks can disrupt our body's natural circadian rhythm. This leads to sleeping issues and other health problems. Studies have shown that the transition to DST can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and accidents due to drowsiness.

Energy Savings Are Almost Non-Existent

The main argument for DST is that it saves energy by reducing the need for electrical lighting. Actually, the energy savings are minimal and can even be counteracted by the increased use of heating and air conditioning.

Negatively Impacts Productivity

The disruption to our sleep patterns can also have adverse effects on our productivity and cognitive skills. Almost everyone I know feels more tired and less focused during the transition to and from DST.

Effect on Animals

Animals too are affected by the change in schedules. Pets and livestock can become confused and stressed when their feeding and sleeping schedules are disrupted.

Complications for International Communication

With different cities around the world being in different time zones already, going back and forth between DST only complicates things. It makes scheduling meetings and calls even more difficult.

Here's the thing. Daylight Saving Time may have been useful in the past, but it is no longer necessary in today's world. The health risks, minimal energy savings, and negative impact on one's productivity far outweigh the benefits. I think it's time for us to abandon this outdated tradition once and for all.
