Texas will join the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force along with other states to try to stop robocalls by taking legal action against them.

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, the task force’s goal is to reduce the number of illegal robocalls coming into the U.S. by going after providers especially.

To put it in perspective, over 33 million robocalls scammed over $29.8 billion from American citizens in 2021.

“Robocalls have become a nationwide problem, and I’m proud to join my fellow Attorneys General to put a stop to the incessant interruptions these calls inflict on Texans every day,” said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a press release. “We will take this fight to all who assist or enable these scam calls. If the telecom industry refuses to create and comply with reasonable regulations, then our Task Force will demand compliance.”

Paxton continued in the press release saying providers are not paying attention to robocalls, most of which come from other countries around the world. The task force has already issued several investigations of providers and other companies allowing these robocalls from other countries to get to U.S. citizens.

Tips from the press release offered several ways for citizens to avoid the scams coming in from robocalls, like being wary of callers asking for payments through wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Also, be aware of people trying to pose as government officials and not giving out any personal information if you are worried the call might be a scam.
