Environment can play a heavy role in our general wellbeing and happiness. If you are surrounded by darkness, even the light hurts your eyes.

Sure, it's possible to overcome a lot through hard work and a good attitude, but what happens when the deck is stacked so badly against you that you have almost no chance to win?

What if that bad deck is the very town you live in? What if you were born and raised there? What if you are stuck there because of family or some other obligation? What if you have no opportunities to better yourself financially or otherwise? It all sounds so...miserable, doesn't it?

Of course, "miserable" is subjective, but recently Business Insider did an analysis of the "Most Miserable" towns in American based off of census data. It appears their primary focus was on unemployment and poverty data, and I think we can all agree that poverty is a huge factor in human misery. Of course, there's plenty of well-to-do people who are absolutely miserable, but money does tend to solve a lot of problems very quickly and efficiently.

In addition to the numbers they pulled, Business Insider also researched the history and other factors about their "miserable" towns. And a whopping 5 of those 50 towns were here in the Lone Star State.

Here's are the five most miserable towns in Texas, with their relative ranking. I will also attempt to defend each one, because my hometown has certainly gotten a lot of flack, but I've made a good life in Lubbock.
