Things to do in Abilene Besides Going to a Bar
We frequently hear how Abilene is so boring and there's never anything to do here. In the same breath, many say there's nothing to do here in town besides going to a bar.
Well, I decided to reach out to our friends on Facebook to see what forms of entertainment Abilene has that don't include going to bars and the results were funny and sad.
Then again, so is Abilene.
First off, this isn't a "bash the bars" article. I love our area bars. I'm merely attempting to answer the question about what there is to do here in Abilene without going to a bar.
If you look hard enough, you can find a ton of stuff to do here in the area. However, not all of those options are what I consider quality entertainment. You know, the stuff people look online for before going to visit a place.
Oh yeah, I'm also excluding restaurants. All cities have restaurants. Those are enhancements to your visit, not a major reason for the said visit.
According to our listeners, the following are things you can do in Abilene without going to a bar.
The Abilene Zoo is, easily, one of the nicest zoos in the nation for cities our size.
You can't go wrong with a visit to Play Faire Park. There's miniature golf and then there's Play Faire Park. Along with holes in one, you can also catch some live music out there many weekends.
Our lone drive-in theater is truly a hidden gem of the area as drive-in theaters are a dying breed.
The Historic Paramount Theater is truly the centerpiece of Downtown Abilene. Even though they have a roof, you get to watch plays and classic films "under the stars", thanks to the breathtaking decor in the main theater section.
The closest Abilene has to all-encompassing family fun with bowling, laser tag, escape rooms, go-karts, and more.
Perfect for the entire family, Retroworld Arcade takes you back to the height of the arcade era with some of the best classic video games ever.
Abilene's one and only dirt track is perfect for the entire family.
If you're looking for water entertainment, we're very limited to Adventure Cove and a few splash pads.
If you're into arts and crafts, Board and Brush is for you. They specialize in unique wood decor projects and are perfect for date nights or even group activities.
Frontier Texas is a state-of-the-art, interactive museum that uses holograms to take you on a trip back to the old west.
Nothing like getting with your friends and throwing axes around. This is one of our newest features and is some of the most fun you can have, legally, with your clothes on.
There's other stuff to do in Abilene, but the gallery above represents our primary area attractions. While there are plenty of events, like rodeos and ACU Sing Song, that bring in visitors, Abilene is truly lacking in the mainstay attractions category.
Aside from our incredible zoo, there really isn't any kind of attraction that makes Abilene a destination.
That's where our city leaders have failed us in a major way and that's just sad. Then again, they probably think that going to church is the equivalent of riding a rollercoaster or going to a pro baseball game.
Looks like our city leaders drank too much coffee at Monk's because they are truly trying to "Keep Abilene Boring".
Did I miss anything? If so, shoot me an email and I'll get it added to this list. That is if I'm not at church or the bar.
